‘Great Expectations has added another dimension to the Getting Court Project. Getting Court gives young people the chance to see what goes on in the Crown Court. They witness a variety of cases including sentencing and get  the chance to ask questions to the Judge. The experience not only helps them understand our judicial system, but also acts as a cautionary note, seeing close hand the impact of bad choices and behaviours.

The Great Expectations team join the getting Court session after the students have observed a wide variety of cases. The ex-offenders tell their story to the students. Their stories focus on the choices they made, the impact of these on their families and often what they could have done differently.

Some students were asked what the impact of Great Expectations was on them? Would there be a possible change in their own behaviours?

They said:-

  • It will influence them to behave well
  • More awareness of punishment
  • Aware of consequences now make me think more
  • Shows the real world – need to be more like an adult – harsh sentencing for doing things wrong so need to be careful
  • More awareness of punishment
  • The consequences of doing wrong scared them
  • Getting in to trouble would affect their future and lifestyle
  • Would be scared of going to prison

Great Expectations provides an invaluable insight into the lives of people who have made bad choices and the resulting impact on them and their families. I don’t believe there is a more powerful message.’

The Peak Academy, Dursley

The Peak Academy has worked closely with Great expectations project for the last 3 years. I recommend the programme highly. Our pupils are some of the most vulnerable children in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties.  Our pupils have embraced the opportunity to listen to ‘real life’ experiences from mentors and serving prisoners. Their advice and reflections has enabled pupils to reflect on their behaviours and led to significant improvements.

Hartpury College, Gloucester

First of all thank you so much for all the AMAZING work you all do. I found this talk very eye opening to the work you do, your not just someone who arrests people, there is much more to your jobs. Fuzz, your story is very interesting, and I it’s amazing how you’ve come this far. I really thought that a “leopard never changes its spots” but… Your living proof that you can change massively as a person. Thank you for taking time out your busy schedules to come and talk to us. Hearing from Matt and all about the Great Expectations and what they do, made me think that there are people out there like him that are there to help people and what they do makes me really appreciate it because Great Expectations I am sure have helped so many people.

Hearing from Alex and what he does and all the effort that he has put into helping the youth and trying to change peoples life makes me think that there are people out there that will help and what Alex is doing will change so many lives and young people can be influenced to change their life and live it to the best of their abilities so hearing from them really made me think.

Fuzz was amazing because hearing from someone that has gone through and experienced prison and hearing about his life and all that he has been through made me think that, it really does happen out there and people really do go through horrible things and what he went through was horrible but he made us laugh which I think made all what he said sink in and made us realise that none of us what to go through what he send through

It was interesting to hear from police officers on how they have helped develop and reform crime in Gloucester particularly with reforming young people. Fuzz gave a fantastic presentation on his life and the choices he made. He was quite chill and spoke with language teens would use which made his account all the better and extremely interesting.

I thought the talk was very interesting and really helpful for our assignments, it was different to other talks because it gives you a first hand insight into what it is actually like to go to prison and be involved in instead of rubbish from other people
